Govt grants Ganesh Chaturthi holiday on Sept 19 in DK, Udupi districts

The government has issued an official order regarding the change in Ganesh Chaturthi holiday. The official holiday will be on Tuesday, September 19 instead of Monday, September 18 in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi has led to some confusion regarding the designated holiday in the state. While the festival is observed on Monday (September 18) in numerous locations, in others, it falls on Tuesday (September 19). Initially, the government had declared Monday as the official holiday.

In coastal districts, there was a growing demand for the government to align the holiday with the day of the festival, which is Tuesday. Elected representatives and community leaders had jointly submitted a formal request to the government to make this adjustment.

Dakshina Kannada district’s in-charge minister, Dinesh Gundurao, further bolstered this plea by personally corresponding with the chief secretary and district commissioner, urging them to grant leave on September 19.

Now, the government’s official order has been issued to reflect this change. Consequently, in observance of Ganesh Chaturthi, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will have a government holiday on Tuesday, September 19, aligning with the day of the festival.
