Gadag: In another incident of assault, a Zilla Panchayat member who came to cast his vote for Gram Panchayat election was brutally attacked by Congress activists.

The victim has been identified as Shivakumar Neelagunda. He was at booth number 105 of Menasagi gram panchayat in Rona taluk to cast his vote when the incident took place.

It is alleged that the Hiregowda brothers who are also Congress activists attacked Shivakumar and hit him brutally and this resulted in an argument between the congress and BJP activists.

On sensing the gravity of the situation the police interfered with the lathi charge in order to stop the riot building.

This incident is also said to have caused a political feud, following which the police tightened the security.

Voting for a total of 2,709 panchayats of 109 taluks in Karnataka is underway in the second phase of Gram Panchayat elections on Sunday, December 27.

There are 1,05,431 candidates in the fray for 39,378 seats. Polling will be held from 7 am to 5 pm in over 20,728 booths. A total of 3,697 candidates have been elected unopposed already, poll officials said.
