‘Griha Jyoti’ Scheme: CM Siddaramaiah issues guidelines for free electricity

The newly formed Siddaramaiah-led state government has given its approval for the ‘Griha Jyoti’ scheme, which guarantees free electricity for eligible households. In a recent development, the government has issued an order outlining the terms and conditions related to the scheme.

To avail themselves of the benefits under the Griha Jyoti Yojana, customers are advised to apply through the Seva Sindhu portal, ensuring a streamlined application process.

The government had announced that under this scheme, the average units of electricity used by consumers in the last 12 months will be taken into account and above that 10 per cent will be added and whatever the units, a maximum of 200 will be borne by the government.

It is important to note that the Griha Jyoti Yojana applies to the electricity consumption bill issued in August for the month of July.

The following rules govern the implementation of the scheme:

Customers exceeding the 200-unit limit will be responsible for paying the full electricity bill.

The scheme is applicable only for domestic electricity connections and does not cover electricity usage for commercial purposes.

Each month, a bill will be generated based on the total electricity consumed after meter reading.

After deducting the customer’s eligible amount from the bill, the remaining balance will be presented as the net bill, which the customer is required to pay.

If the bill amount is lower than the eligible unit/amount, customers will receive a zero bill.

Applicants interested in availing the scheme’s benefits must apply through the Seva Sindhu portal.

Beneficiaries of the Bhagya Jyoti, Kutira Jyoti Yojana, and Amrita Jyoti Yojana, currently in effect, are also eligible to participate in the Griha Jyoti scheme.

Outstanding electricity charges until the end of June 20, 2023, including the electricity bill issued in July for electricity used in June, must be paid within three months. Failure to comply within this period will result in disconnection of the electricity connection.

Metering and meter readings are mandatory for domestic electricity consumer plants.

If there are multiple meters registered under the name of domestic usage, only one is eligible to avail the benefits under this scheme.
