In the wake of the recent surprise attack launched by Hamas militants on Israel, Coastal Karnataka residents currently employed in various capacities across the region have found themselves amidst a situation of increasing uncertainty. While thousands remain safe, the palpable tension is evident as the sound of explosions reverberates through the land.
Pramila Prabhu from Udupi’s Herga, who has been working as a nurse in Tel Aviv for the past six years, shared her experience, stating, “You don’t know when a rocket will come. There is a system that sounds a siren 1 minute before the rocket is expected to hit. We are instructed to immediately go inside the iron room and hide.” Pramila emphasized that they are in constant communication with the Indian embassy and, for now, there have been no casualties in their vicinity.
Similarly, Rajesh Salian, a resident of Saralebettu in Manipal, who has been living in Israel for a decade, experienced a period of anxiety due to a lack of contact since Sunday. However, contact was reestablished on Monday afternoon, providing some relief to his family back in Udupi.
Victor D’Souza in Tel Aviv and Veena D’Souza in Natalia, both from Palimar village, assured that they are currently in good health. They emphasized the vigilance exercised by the Israeli administration, especially in busy areas like schools and malls, which have been temporarily closed.
Contact us if in distress: Udupi DC
Udupi: The Udupi DC Dr Vidyakumari emphasized that there is currently no information about any residents from the district in distress Israel, adding that the situation is being closely monitored. Addressing reporters on Monday, she mentioned that neither locals nor the embassy have reported any problems so far.
“The Udupi district administration will act in accordance with government directives. In case residents of Udupi face difficulties in Israel, they are advised to contact the embassy. Families who receive information can notify the district administration about the situation,” she said. It should be noted that there is no precise data available regarding the number of Udupi residents currently in Israel.
Bomb shelter in every house
It is noteworthy that every household in Israel is equipped with a bomb shelter, and a warning siren precedes any bomb or missile attack. This precautionary measure ensures the safety of residents even in the event of structural damage.
As the situation continues to evolve, Air India flights between India and Israel have been suspended until October 14. This has left those in Israel with a sense of uncertainty, contemplating the possibility of returning to their homeland should the situation further escalate.
‘At least 113 Mangaluru residents in Israel’
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal reported that there are approximately 113 people from Mangalore in Israel, though the exact number may be higher, as efforts are underway to gather comprehensive information.
Bishop of Mangalore Christian Diocese Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha expressed his concerns over the conflict, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution. He urged world leaders to collaborate in bringing an end to this decades-long strife.
As this situation continues to develop, Udayavani will continue to provide updates as they become available. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this conflict, and we hope for a swift and peaceful resolution.
