HC stays work on Jesus Christ statue at Kapalabetta

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday restrained the Harobele Kapalabetta Abhivruddhi Trust from carrying out the construction work on the proposed 101-foot Jesus Christ statue at Kapalabetta in Ramanagara’s Kanakapura taluk here, stating that no work should be carried out without its prior consent.
Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Anthony Swamy and residents of Harobele village, the division bench of the high court on Monday passed an interim stay order on any further construction work on the government plot.
Advocate Ganapathi Bhat Vajarahalli, representing the petitioners in the case said that DK Shivkumar and his brother had sought to sanction of the land, reserved for cattle grazing with an eye on the vote bank.
In his argument, Advocate Ganapathi said that allotment of government property for use by private persons was in violation of the Supreme Court directive and thus sought the court to quash the order sanctioning grant of land to the trust.
