Chirping birds; social concern of the drivers

Udupi: The auto rickshaw stand located at Doddanagudde Mannoligujji within Udupi municipality limits attracts the public in a special way through health lessons and the chirping of birds.

A 42 feet long board with the title “Our health is our hands” provides information regarding more than 100 fruits and vegetables with photos. Many citizens come here to take note of this information. Initially, the board gave information regarding homemade medicine and presently it is giving comprehensive information concerning vegetables and fruits.

Attractive birds

Another specialty here is the auto rickshaw drivers here love for birds.  Earlier there was a small cage here which contained 10 love birds. These birds laid eggs and presently the number increased to 21 birds and hence a bigger cage has been created. Currently, these birds have become a wonderful attraction for children as well as adults. People who take walk along the roads here come and sit on the bench at the stand, read the information regarding fruits and vegetables and enjoy the company of birds.

For the society…

The drivers here have continuously being stretching an helping hand to the schools here. They have been providing raincoats, cupboards, bags and other items to Karamballi government primary school and to schools located at Dodanagudde and Gundibailu. They have also installed solar lights within the auto rickshaw stand.

Degree education for poor female student

After an auto rickshaw driver from Carstreet met with an accident and suffered serious injury making it impossible to work, the drivers helped him financially. A mother and her daughter were living in an impoverished state near the hospital at Doddanagudde. The drivers came to their assistance and looked after the education expenses of that girl for 5 years. Presently, the girl has completed her degree. The drivers have continuously being indulged in serving the society including providing rice to some families and donating a wheelchair to a woman’s family located at Ram Bettu in Karamballi, where in the mother of the woman had become physically challenged.

Every month, Rs 200 is deposited in a separate account

Every month, the drivers deposit Rs 200 from their earning in a separate account dedicated for conducting various social service works, looking after the birds and the other maintenance expense of the auto rickshaw stand. A few donors have also joined the cause.  “It is our wish that the public should get more services from the auto rickshaw stand than just the auto service.”– Uday, President, Manoligujje Auto Rickshaw Driver’s Association
