Coastal areas are experiencing a significant increase in temperatures, raising concerns about potential health hazards, particularly viral fever, across urban and rural communities, according to the Meteorological Department.

The department has warned people to be careful about the increasing temperatures and take precautions to avoid health issues. They also mentioned that the temperature might go higher than usual, so people should be extra cautious.

Dos

  • It is advised to avoid going out in direct sunlight between 11 am to 4 pm, and refrain from letting children play outside during this period.
  • Wearing cotton clothes and using umbrellas, hats, or other coverings is suggested to avoid direct exposure to the sun.
  • It is also advised to carry a water bottle and consume liquid foods like fresh water and fruit juices to stay hydrated.
  • Regularly washing hands and covering nose and mouth while sneezing and coughing are recommended. Organic vegetables and fruits are recommended for consumption.

Donts

The public is warned not to take antibiotics without consulting a doctor, and avoid spitting in public places.

Drinking alcohol, beverages with high sugar content, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks should be minimized as they cause dehydration.

Outdoor activities should also be controlled, especially for pregnant women, young children, the elderly, outdoor workers, heart patients, who are at a higher risk of heatstroke.

Some areas along the coast are already reporting cases of viral fever, cough, and cold, indicating the need for caution. The department urges the public to follow their guidelines to prevent the contraction of diseases due to reduced water content in the body.
