Districts of coastal Karnataka and Kodagu received significant rain on Monday, bringing relief from the heat. Cloudy weather persisted, with signs of intensifying pre-monsoon rains due to a possible low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal.

Rain and Weather Report:

On Monday morning, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kasaragod, and Kodagu districts experienced intermittent rain. By evening, the rain intensified, providing much-needed relief from the heat. Belthangadi taluk had moderate rain in the evening after a cloudy day.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rains with thundershowers along the coast on Tuesday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until May 23 due to rough weather conditions.

Temperature Drop:

The rain caused a significant drop in atmospheric temperature. Mangaluru city recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8°C, which is 2.6°C below normal. The minimum temperature was 24.6°C. The Meteorological Department predicts further decreases of 2-4°C.

Traffic woes:

Heavy rain in the evening led to traffic jams in various parts of Mangaluru. The Kottara Cross-Kuntikana road was blocked for about 45 minutes, causing difficulties for motorists.

Udupi: In Udupi, heavy rain started late Sunday night and continued through Monday. Areas like Kundapur, Byndur, Siddapur, and several others saw intermittent rain followed by continuous evening rain with thunder.

Damage Reports

In Kuthpadi, a tree fell on Neeta Shetty’s house, causing damage. Power lines were also affected, leading to outages in many areas. The recent rains have improved water levels in borewells and open wells, though the Swarna River’s inflow remains unchanged.

Sunday night brought thunderous sounds in Sullia and Kadaba, causing some residents to experience electric shocks. A few were treated in the hospital. Monday saw moderate rain in several areas, including Sullia city and Subrahmanya.  Heavy rain with thunder and lightning hit Moodbidri on Monday evening, causing water to flow onto roads, particularly on Alva’s Road.

Kasaragod also experienced heavy rain starting at 3 pm, and continuing into the night. District Collector K. Inbasekar issued a warning due to the possibility of strong winds. The ongoing national highway work led to waterlogged roads, disrupting traffic.

This rain has brought a mix of relief and challenges, with cooler temperatures but also traffic and power issues.
