Heavy Rain in coastal region — Flooding and damage in many areas

Mangaluru: Coastal areas experienced significant rainfall on Thursday.

In Dakshina Kannada district, several areas in Bantwal, Sullia, and Belthangady taluks faced flooding, causing damage. In Udupi district, Kundapura, Byndoor, Brahmavar, and Karkala taluks also experienced flooding.

In Kollur, a landslide resulted in the death of a woman.

Dakshina Kannada district saw heavy rain, leading to damage in several places. Floodwater entered agricultural areas and some homes in rural areas. Trees fell on several houses due to strong winds.

As a precautionary measure, primary and high schools in Bantwal and Belthangady taluks were declared a holiday on Thursday. In Sullia’s Jayanagar, a tree fell on a house causing damage. A landslide occurred in Goonadka. Near Gutthigaru, a landslide beside the highway caused disruption. In Belthangady taluk, the retaining wall of the Khandiga Shri Santana Gopalakrishna temple collapsed.

Water levels in the Netravathi-Mrityunjaya and Kumaradhara rivers in Subrahmanya increased. A house collapsed in Chembugudde near Ullal. A tree fell on the road in Ullal. In Mangaluru’s Derebail area, a landslide threat looms.

Throughout the district, heavy rain was reported, with intermittent showers in Mangaluru city. Near Adyar on the city’s outskirts, artificial flooding occurred on an inner road, with water entering a house.

Three-day ‘Orange Alert’

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ from July 5 to 7, predicting heavy rain and strong winds during this period. Due to the rain, the maximum temperature dropped to 25.3 degrees Celsius, 3.8 degrees Celsius below normal, and the minimum temperature recorded was 22.5 degrees Celsius, 0.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Udupi district: 53 houses damaged

Udupi: The district experienced widespread rain for two days, causing damage to 53 houses and agricultural land due to wind and rain. Rivers in the district are overflowing, causing flooding along their banks.

In Kundapura, Byndoor, Brahmavara, and Hebri taluks, floodwater entered houses. Water flowed over roads in some areas, disrupting vehicle movement. Trees falling on electric poles caused power outages for extended periods.

Tree falls on Anganwadi

In Kukundoor Ayyappa Nagar, Karkala taluk, a large tree fell on an Anganwadi center on the evening of July 3. Fortunately, the children had left for home, preventing major danger. The building sustained damage.

On Thursday, Manipal, Malpe, Udupi, and Kapu areas experienced heavy rain with thunderstorms. Kundapura, Byndoor, and Brahmavar saw significant damage due to heavy rain.

The wind and rain damaged 130 electric poles, 10 transformers, and 2.08 km of power lines, causing MESCOM a loss of Rs 21.72 lakh. Rainfall recorded in various areas: Karkala 111.4 mm, Kundapura 191.0 mm, Udupi 87.2 mm, Byndoor 135.1 mm, Brahmavar 113.9 mm, Kapu 38.5 mm, and Hebri 140.5 mm, with an average rainfall of 132.5 mm across the district.

Schools and colleges closed in Udupi’s three taluks 

Kundapura: Due to rain, Assistant Commissioner announced a holiday for schools and colleges from Anganwadi to PUC in Kundapura, Brahmavar, and Byndoor taluks on July 5. However, there will be no holiday for degree, postgraduate, and ITI institutions.
