Mangaluru/Madikeri: After a short respite from incessant rains, the monsoon returned back to Dakshina Kannada district with several places recording moderate to heavy rainfall on Wednesday, August 8th.

Rise in water level

The A youth water level in Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers stood at 18 meters at Uppinangadi, while River Netravati was flowing at a height of four meters at Bantwal, informed sources in district administration. Since Wednesday evening, the water level has further risen.

On account of heavy rains received in Western Ghats, that water level at Uppinangadi has risen.  As the news about the sudden rise of water levels in Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers spread, many people rushed to Uppinangadi to witness the confluence of these two rivers as the two rivers meeting each other in front of Lord Sahasralingeshwara temple there is deemed to be a holy phenomenon.

The overflowing rivers inundated low-lying area including many agricultural fields. Subramanya and surrounding areas are experiencing floods and Darpanateertha, a tributary of River Kumaradhara too is in spate. Snanada Ghatta at Subhramanya is under water. Vehicular movement along the bridge at Hosmath near Subramanya was affect5ed after the bridge went underwater on account of heavy rains.

Train services affected

A huge boulder got deposited on the railway tracks on Mangaluru-Bengaluru line near Yedakumeri about 65 km away from Nettarana railway statio n, as a result of heavy rain in Western Ghats. This incident happened as landslide occurred in a hill at Kodagaravalli at Shiribagilu near Yedakumeri. The incident affected train movement.

The Karwar express train coming to Mangaluru from Bengaluru was culminated at Sakleshpur station at 10.30 am. The passengers were sent by nine buses hired from KSRTC.

Due to the land slide, the service of Train No.16576 Mangaluru junction-Yeswantpur Tri-weekly Express (scheduled Departure time – Mangaluru Junction at 11.30 hours) on 08.08.2018 remain partially cancelled between Mangaluru Junction and Hassan.

Landslide in Madikeri

The heavy rains since Tuesday night has increased the water level in Kaveri river and roads near Bhagamandala-Triveni confluence have been inundated. A bus that was parked on the roadside during the night was found partly submerged in the rising water in the morning.

Heavy rains have covered Madikeri city with drainage water over flowing and entering houses in Kaveri layout and a huge wall collapsed on to a house and damaged it in Mangaladevi layout. Water is flowing at the level of the bridge on LIC road and due to the lack of retaining wall, the edges of the road are collapsing.

National highway in danger

Due to the continuous rain, a part of the national highway near Katikeri along the Madikeri-Mangaluru road has collapsed. It had earlier suffered cracks due to the incessant rains that poured last month. The road along with its wall had collapsed to a depth of 300 meters.

The landslide began as vehicles were plying along the route on Wednesday morning. The electricity poles along the roadside are dangerously bent to one side and vehicular movement is permitted only on one side of the road. The police have visited and inspected the spot and barricades have been installed as a precautionary measure.
