Heavy rains lash Dakshina Kannada; Flooding disrupts traffic at Pumpwell

Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms have battered the Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday evening. The sudden surge in rainfall caused damage in some areas.

The onset of the retreating monsoon had previously brought light rains, but by Sunday, the weather had shifted to overcast skies and brief sunny spells before heavy downpours began. The rain, which intensified in the evening, resulted in damage in several parts of the district.

In addition to Mangaluru, areas like Puttur, Bellare, Sullia, Uppinangady, and Belthangady experienced heavy rainfall coupled with gusty winds. In Bantwal taluk’s Kepu, a house was damaged due to lightning, while in Narikombu village, coconut trees were uprooted, causing further damage.

Flooding Disrupts Traffic at Pumpwell Junction

One of the most affected areas was Pumpwell Junction. The service road and the area below the flyover were flooded due to waterlogging, creating significant obstacles for vehicle movement. Being a major junction, the traffic congestion that typically plagues the area in the evening was worsened by the downpour.

Additionally, the Navratri celebrations underway in Mangaluru had already caused a buildup of traffic in the city.

Flooding on the roads, including in Bajal and other low-lying areas, exacerbated the situation, causing more inconvenience to commuters.
