New Delhi: Six historical sites in India, including Hire Benakal in the Koppal district of Karnataka, have been listed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site tentative list.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had sent a list of 9 sites to UNESCO along with their historical significance for inclusion in the tentative list.

UNESCO has selected 6 among them.

With this, the total number of heritage sites in India on the list has increased to 48.

Hire Benakal is located about 10 kilometres west of Gangavati town in Koppal district and has about 400 megalithic monuments assumed to be burial ground dating back to the Neolithic period.

It is said to be the largest of more than 2,000 Neolithic burial sites discovered in southern India.
