Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara announced that the Karnataka government is set to increase sports scholarships and promote sports activities across the state. The government is considering the construction of synthetic tracks in all districts, with 13 districts already having such facilities.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the Karnataka State Senior and Youth Meet-2024, organized by the Udupi District Amateur Athletics Association at Ajjarkad District Stadium on Thursday.
He highlighted that 2% of police recruitment is reserved for athletes, with 80 police personnel, including 16 inspectors, already recruited under this quota. Among them, four are athletes. This 2% reservation for athletes has been extended to all recruitment processes beyond the police department.
“We are planning to provide more sports scholarships to children. Universities should prioritize sports as it contributes to both mental and physical well-being, and also aids in academics,” he stated.
International athlete Pramila Aiyappa emphasized the need to help children excel in sports without imposing undue pressure. She urged for the recruitment of athletes under the sports quota in the police department and the upgrading of district sports facilities.
The event was attended by Association State Secretary Rajuvelu, former minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Congress leader Prasad Raj Kanchan, and Association District President Hariprasad Rai.
