In a significant breakthrough, the Halasuru police have arrested a woman who was caught stealing gold jewelry from the house where she worked. The accused, identified as Mamatha (36) from Jogupalya, was employed as a cook in the residence of businessman Amarendra.
Mamatha had been working at Amarendra’s house for several years. On November 25, 2023, while Amarendra and his family were attending an event, Mamatha took advantage of their absence and used a key to access the locked room where the jewelry was kept. She stole the gold ornaments and later melted them down into gold bars, which she then stored in her own house.
The theft went unnoticed for several months until June 7, when Amarendra discovered the gold was missing while checking the cupboard. He promptly reported the theft to the Halasuru police. Upon investigation, the police became suspicious of Mamatha due to her presence in the house during the theft.
When questioned, Mamatha confessed to the crime. The police recovered three gold bars weighing 225 grams and two gold bangles, all worth approximately Rs 16 lakhs, from her possession.
Amarendra had initially suspected Mamatha as she was the only one in the house when the theft occurred. He shared his suspicions with the police, leading to her detention and subsequent confession. Mamatha was produced in court and remanded to police custody for five days for further investigation.
