Hubballi martyr laid to rest without State honor

Hubballi: In a strange twist of events, a 29-year-old soldier from Hubballi, who was initially reported as martyred, on Tuesday, during an anti-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir, committed suicide informed the army.

Manjappa Hanumantappa Olekar, a soldier of the 19 Madras Regiment allegedly shot himself while he was at the barracks.

Manjappa’s mortal remains were laid to rest at his native village Inam Veerapur in the taluk on Thursday. However, he was not given a State honour as he had committed suicide.

Meanwhile, Manjappa’s parents have said that their son would not have committed suicide and demanded an inquiry into his death.
