I should be in forefront if a Dalit CM proposal comes, says KH Muniyappa

Senior Karnataka Congress leader K.H. Muniyappa has opened up on the possibility of a Dalit Chief Minister in the state. The influential leader, who has served as a Union Minister, asserted that if such a proposal comes to the fore, he would be at the forefront.

In an interview with Udayavani, Muniyappa reflected on the long-standing demand for a Dalit Chief Minister in Karnataka.

“Dalit CM demand is not new”

“For over 25 years, the call for a Dalit CM has persisted, but the opportunity has not materialized, despite the state having 25% SC and ST population,” Muniyappa remarked. He pointed out that even seasoned politicians like Mallikarjun Kharge have not had the chance to occupy the CM’s position, indicating that this demand has remained unmet for a long time.

Focus on unity

Addressing the current political scenario, Muniyappa emphasized that now is not the time to push for leadership changes. “We are in a critical phase where the BJP is trying to topple the government with allegations. Our primary focus should be on staying united and overcoming the challenges before us,” he stressed. He also expressed that the decision regarding a Dalit CM, if ever considered, lies in the hands of the high command.

On allegations against the government

Muniyappa defended the Congress-led government in Karnataka against allegations of corruption. He stated that the BJP is raising baseless accusations, particularly regarding the MUDA scandal, to destabilize the administration. “Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has no involvement in the MUDA case, and the allegations are politically motivated,” Muniyappa stated firmly.

On social justice and internal reservations

When asked about the implementation of internal reservations, Muniyappa confirmed that the government is keen on ensuring social justice for backward communities. “Reservations must be implemented based on population, and it is crucial to ensure that all sub-castes get equal representation,” he explained.

Muniyappa further stated that the government is committed to upholding the Supreme Court’s directive on internal reservations and assured that no community will be left behind.

Annabhagya scheme and rice supply issues

Muniyappa also touched upon the state’s ambitious Annabhagya scheme, which has faced challenges due to rice shortages. “We are working on providing food kits to beneficiaries while resolving supply issues. The central government’s offer to provide rice at Rs 28 per kg has been accepted, and we are taking necessary steps to ensure the availability of rice to all eligible beneficiaries,” he clarified.

Discrimination from the central govt?

When questioned about the alleged discrimination Karnataka faces from the Centre, Muniyappa accused the Modi government of adopting a step-motherly attitude towards the state. “Despite Karnataka contributing significant revenue to the Centre, the state is not receiving its fair share. We are still awaiting the Rs 5,000 crore relief that was promised,” Muniyappa said. He also mentioned that the Karnataka government is planning a southern states’ conference to address these concerns.
