Illegal sand transport: Driver arrested, lorry seized

Kaup: A lorry which was illegally transporting sand from Mangaluru to Udupi was stopped by Kaup police who arrested the lorry driver and seized 17 tons of sand worth Rs 20,000.

On Wednesday midnight, Manju from Belavadi village in Mysuru was transporting sand from Mangaluru to towards Udupi. However, Kaup police received information of the illegal activity and hence the police lay in wait for the lorry at Kaup along NH 66 under the leadership of Inspector Naveen Naik. When the police signaled the approaching lorry to stop, Manju refused to stop and instead accelerated in a bid to give them the slip. Immediately, the police chased the lorry in their jeep and eventually caught the driver and seized the lorry.

During questioning Manju revealed that he had loaded the sand at Farangipet and was going towards Udupi as per the direction of one Shamit Manipal. A case in this regard has been registered with Kaup police.
