Belagavi: The unfurling of what is claimed to be the country’s tallest national flag was unfurled in Belagavi on Monday. The 9,600 sq.ft flag on a 110 m flag pole was hoisted by the District in-charge Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.
Religious pioneers of Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh organizations were also present. MLA Firoz Sait along with other district authorities also took part in the event.
Mr. Jarkiholi said the flag was a symbol of togetherness and harmony of culture in Belagavi. “BJP isn’t the sole caretaker of patriotism. We all are proud Indians. We regard the principles of unity and harmony enshrined in the Constitution. India is a nation of numerous beliefs and all are equivalent here,” he said.
Mr. Sait watched that different religious, cultural and social gatherings had flags of various colours, but the national flag symbolized the cultural unity. He portrayed this as a noteworthy day and said the people of Belagavi had one more reason to be proud of their city.
“The momentous flag will be flown consistently, and will be sufficiently bright during the night. It ought to be seen by inhabitants of Belagavi from a remote place and stay visible always,” Mr. Sait said.
Deputy Commissioner S. Ziyaullah, Police Commissioner D.C. Rajappa, ZP CEO R. Ramachandran, City Corporation Commissioner Shashidhar Kurer, Maratha Light Infantry regimental focus officers, and others were present.
The 110 m tall flag post at Kote Kere is close to the Belagavi fortress in the city. It is taller than the post in Pune (107 m) and the one at the Indo-Pak border at Attari (105 m). The flag is made of weatherproof Denier polyester texture. Two shorter posts with flood lights have been raised around the banner.
