Mangaluru: Wheels have finally started turning on the demand for an international Cricket stadium in Mangaluru. Ancillary work is already underway for the construction of the new stadium near Konaje on the outskirts of the city, which will come up on about 20 acres of land.

It is gathered that officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have inspected the allotted site and the land lease process is almost finalized. Upon completion of the stadium, the coastal city will have an opportunity to host national tournaments including U-18, India A matches, Ranji Trophy, and women’s cricket.

In 1999, Karnataka Cricket Association (KCA) put forward a proposal to the Dakshina Kannada district administration to build a well-equipped cricket ground in Mangaluru. For this KSCA has asked for allotting 15 acres of land. However, even after 23 years since the proposal, the new stadium is yet to materialize.

In 2002, another proposal was mooted to build a cricket stadium and a comprehensive sports complex at the existing golf course in Pilikula. There is about 72 acres of land here. Then came the proposal to build a sports complex at Thannirbavi. But there was not much progress on both fronts.

At present, Mangaluru can not host any national tourney. Currently, Ranji Trophy matches are being held in Shivamogga, Hubballi, Mysuru, and a few other districts of the state. Cricket lovers in Mangaluru blame the non-availability of a proper cricket ground for the same.

Konaje is being favoured for the construction of the new stadium due to its closeness to Kasaragod, and for having airport connectivity.
