Team Udayavani, Sep 8, 2020, 4:18 PM IST
International Literacy Day is celebrated on 8 September every year to raise awareness about the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies
International Literacy Day was founded by proclamation of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, in 1966 “to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.”
According to UNESCO, this year International Literacy Day focuses on “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond,” especially on the role of educators and changing pedagogies.
The theme highlights literacy learning in a lifelong learning perspective, and therefore, mainly focuses on youth and adults.
Also, the global celebrations of International Literacy Day this year will be composed of two virtual meetings. Meeting on ‘Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond: the role of educators and changing pedagogies’ and Meeting on the Laureates of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2020.
