‘Is it you in the video?’: Beware of the new Facebook Messenger scam

Team Udayavani, Dec 31, 2020, 4:13 PM IST

A new Facebook Messenger scam has been identified where users receive a link which asks them, “Is it you in the video?”

The link does not have a video and it redirects users to a URL that shows a page similar to Facebook’s login page. If users enter their details, they stand to lose access to their Facebook accounts.

What can you do

First thing, Facebook was an early adopter of HTTPS-for-everything, so any page claiming to represent Facebook but doesn’t have HTTPS is fake.

Use two-factor authentication (TFA) to protect your account. If you do so, crooks won’t be able to log in to your Facebook account as they will be asked to enter a security code which only you can enter.

Users are also advised to use an anti-virus with a built-in web filter

Use password manager as you can automatically get a different password for every site and they are random which can’t be guessed. Also, it is faster to change your password if you do get hacked
