Mangaluru: Twelve years ago today, Mangaluru witnessed one of India’s worst air crashes. The Air India Express flight IX-812 from Dubai to Mangalore crashed while landing at the Mangalore airport at 6:05 am on May 22, 2010.
On the fateful day of May 22, 2010, the aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, with 166 people on board, overshot the runway and crashed into the valley before bursting into flames. As many as 158 people on board the aircraft perished that day. Only 8 could survive.
The final investigation report held the Captain’s failure to perform a safe landing as ‘the direct cause of accident’. The captain ignored warning from the aircraft was well as his co-pilot’s call for a ‘go around’ and continued with the “unstabilized approach” into Mangalore, resulting in the crash.
Like every year, the Dakshina Kannada has planned a memorial service to remember the crash victims at the “Memorial Park” at Thannirbavi on Sunday morning at 10.30 AM.
