Udupi/Mangaluru: The Janata Curfew called on by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, March 22 has been duly adhered to by the residents of the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada with almost everything coming to a standstill.

In Udupi, shops were shuttered and private buses had stopped all services. Milk and newspaper suppliers were seen only early in the morning.

Large crowds were seen on Saturday, March 21 in markets and groceries buying items in bulk to stock up for the period ahead.

Mangaluru too wore a deserted look. All establishments were shut and few vehicles were seen moving across the city.

As in Udupi essential services such as milk vendors and ambulances were only active.

Trucks were seen parked in large numbers at Kulur and Panambur. Railway stations in the city too were empty.

Police personnel were seen in many parts of the city to prevent any untoward incidents during the Janata Curfew. Many organisations had called for a protest on this day against the Citizenship Amendment Act, National Register of Citizens and National Population Register.

COVID-19 cases in the country have risen to more than 300 and many states have imposed lockdowns to curb the spread of the virus.
