Reliance Jio plans to launch a 5G smartphone for under ₹5,000 and gradually reduce its price to ₹2,500-₹3,000 when operation scales up, PTI reported quoting a company official.

In July, Google announced a ₹33,737-crore investment for a 7.7% stake in Jio Platforms. At the time, Mukesh Ambani said Jio and Google will build an Android-based operating system for ‘low-cost’ smartphone.

The company is also working on its own 5G network equipment and has asked the Department of Telecom to allocate it spectrum for testing before exporting these products. The government is yet to heed to the request of Reliance Jio.
