Karwar: The Kaiga Atomic Power Station (KAPS) which recently created a new world record among pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) is all set to create a new record.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has given its nod for keeping the Kaiga Atomic Power Station (KAPS) operational till December 31.
“As on Thursday, November 15, the plant has generated power for 916 days continuously. If things go favorably for next couple of weeks, KAPS will become the first plant to have generated electricity continuously for maximum days breaking the record of continuous power generation for 940 days currently held by Heysham Power Station, Heysham, Lancashire, England,” informed officials.
It may be recalled that on October 24 (KAPS) had become the first-ever plant in the Heavy Pressurised Water category to have generated power continuously for 894 days. Previously a unit of Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (PNGS) had held this record.
