Kalaburagi: A large-scale protest was held on Monday (Dec 9) under the leadership of the Banjara community, supported by various pro-Hindu organizations, condemning the alleged rape of a minor student by a teacher in the Yadrami area.
The protest witnessed incidents of stone pelting at various locations. Stones were hurled at cars, bikes, auto-rickshaws, and shops, resulting in damages. An auto driver also sustained injuries during the clashes.
Thousands of people from the Banjara community participated in the protest, which included religious leaders, political figures, and the general public from across the district.
Meanwhile, a complaint was lodged at Brahmapur police station against Manikantha Rathod for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the Muslim community. Following the complaint, police initiated action to arrest him. Security was heightened as intelligence suggested Rathod might attend the protest, though he remains in hiding.
Former MP Dr. Umesh Jadhav, speaking at the protest, criticized the Congress government, alleging an increase in atrocities against Hindus since it came to power. He demanded capital punishment for the accused in the Yadrami incident.
Siddhalinga Swamiji, another protest leader, highlighted other instances of atrocities against Hindus, particularly Dalits, in the Kalaburagi district. He questioned why District In-Charge Minister Priyank Kharge, who often comments on various issues, remained silent on this matter.
Protesters also demanded compensation and a government job for the Yadrami victim. Several religious leaders joined the demonstration to show solidarity.
The agitators have refused to withdraw the protest until the District Commissioner personally accepts their memorandum. They warned of a district-wide bandh if their demands were not addressed.
