Kallapu: Overturned chemical-laden tanker removed in late night operation

A chemical-laden tanker that overturned at Kallapu on NH 66 on Tuesday, March 21 night was removed by deploying cranes provided by the BASF.

The tanker was heading towards Kochi from Baikampady. The accident took place after its driver, Mayur lost control of the vehicle causing it to topple. Mayur sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The overturned tanker disrupted vehicular movement and also caused panic among residents over gas leakage. It is gathered that the nearby vicinity was filled with foul smell of gas and nearby establishments were directed to turn off their electrical equipments, light as a precautionary measure.

BASF safety team visited the spot and overlooked the operation of removal of the tanker. Traffic was brought to a halt and cranes were to lift and load the tanker onto another vehicle.

Meanwhile the BASF safety officer informed that chemical in the tanker is used for making soaps and is not of a hazardous nature.

The operation lasted till 1 am on Wednesday March 22 and was conducted by the fire service squad, ACP Dhanya N Nayak, south traffic police inspector Ramesh Hanapur, Ullal station officer Sandeep G S led the operation.
