Kandlur police station attack: Number of arrested accused increases to eight

Kundapur: The number of accused arrested for stone pelting at Kandlur police station retaliation to the police action against illegal sand mining has increased to eight. The accused have been arrested on the charges of assaulting policemen and preventing a public servant from delivering his duty.
In the backdrop of the attack on the police station, additional police force including the reserve force had been deployed here. Those arrested in connection to the incident are Betti Shahid, Zakir Hussain, Tabriz and Shakeer and on Tuesday, three more were arrested. Shahid, Abdul Hamid and K M Fahal were planning to escape to a far off place but their bid to escape was cut short when they were nabbed at Kundapur railway station. The police are conducting searches to catch the remaining accused.
Yet, illegal sand mining is occurring continuously in Kandlur. When the police conducted a raid at the illegal sand unit, the accused fled, but when the police returned back to the police station with the seized vehicles, miscreants’ pelted stones at the station. When the police attempted to arrest them, one of the accused was nabbed and four bikes were seized.
Udupi SP Nisha James has personally kept an eye on the incident. Two, years back, a few of the accused from the very same gang had attacked the then Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis, Sub Division Officer Shipla Nag and Revenue Department staff Hantaraj.
