Mangaluru: Monsoon has entered the coast of the state and is expected to strengthen in a few days, informed the Weather Department.

Normally, monsoon enters Kerala on June 1st and in a couple days enters the karavali. But this time, the monsoon entered Kerala on June 9th and due to the presence of the cyclone ‘Vayu’, the entry of the monsoon to the coast was delayed by a week.

Pre monsoon showers in karavali were weak this time.  In comparison to the normal rainfall of 227.1mm in DK, only 77.6mm of rain was received with a deficit of 66%. Udupi district received only 14.4mm of rain to the usual rain of 227.3mm, thereby causing a deficit of 94%. Kodagu district too has faced a rainfall deficit of 48%.

The weather department has forecasted that southern India will experience good rain at 93% this monsoon. Last year, the district had received good rain. 3,551mm of rain was received from June 1st to September and there was a 3% increase in the rainfall. Udupi district had received slightly less rain at 3,784mm facing a deficit of around 7%.

Normal rain

Friday provided a little reprieve from the rain which was falling since two days. Sporadic rain was experienced in Mangaluru city on Friday. In Udupi district, normal rain was reported from Manipal, Kundapur, Kumbhasi, Karkala, Padubidri, Kaup, Kollur and Koteshwara areas.
