Karkala: Outrage after police halt Yakshagana performance, SP issues clarification

Karkala: A Yakshagana performance in Mundli, near Jarkala, Shirlal village in Karkala taluk, was halted by police on Tuesday night. The authorities intervened, citing the absence of permission to use loudspeakers. This action sparked outrage among the villagers.

Speaking on the incident, the villagers expressed their discontent. “We organize such Yakshagana performances every year. This time, the police are causing unnecessary trouble,” they alleged. They further blamed the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) for failing to issue timely permissions, leading to the predicament.

The police clarified their stance, stating, “We were simply enforcing the rules. The performance was halted as there was no valid permission for using loudspeakers.”

The incident created a stir in the village, with the matter gaining significant traction on social media. Many netizens condemned the disruption of cultural events, arguing that such actions were unwarranted.

SP’s Statement:

Speaking about the incident, the Superintendent of Police Dr Arun K explained that the Yakshagana performance was organized without prior intimation to the Ajjarkad police. “We received complaints from the public regarding disturbances caused by the use of loudspeakers at night. Upon investigation, it was found that the organizers lacked permission for both the event and loudspeaker use,” the SP stated.

The police reportedly instructed the organizers at 11:30 PM to stop the use of loudspeakers. However, the performance continued until 4:30 AM. As a result, a case has been registered under Ajjarkad Police Station with Crime Number 02/25, invoking sections 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 37 of the Karnataka Police Act.

The police reiterated that organizing cultural events and using loudspeakers in public places require proper permission. They also affirmed their commitment to addressing public grievances in accordance with the guidelines set by the Honorable Supreme Court of India.
