Police arrested a 39-year-old woman and her relative in connection with theft of Rs 9.75 lakh valuables at a residence in Karkala’s Kalya.
The arrested are identified as Shiba, a resident of Kalya and Prasad (34), a Bantwal resident. Shiba had joined hands with Prasad, a habitual offender to steal valuables from the residence of her neighbour Usha Jagadish Anchan.
On December 3, Shiba and Usha Anchan were to attend a Mehendi function together. Shiba conveyed this information to Prasad.
On the day of the incident, Shiba suggested Usha that she wear a small mangalsutra instead of the big one for the function, Later Shiba insisted that they walk to the function venue rather than going on a two-wheeler.
Meanwhile, Prasad used this opportunity to gain entry into Usha’s house and stole 156 gram of gold ornaments, cash and other valuables worth Rs 9.75 lac from her residence.
Notably, Shiba who aided in the theft continued to act innocently and even expressed concern over the theft.
A team of Karkala police personnel successfully cracked the theft case and seized 216 grams of gold ornaments and 77 grams of silver ornaments from the accused.
Police informed that Prasad aka Pacchu has theft cases registered against him in Bantwal rural, Moodbidri and Karkala police stations. He is also accused in a POCSO case as well as the Sudarshan Jain murder case
The accused have been produced in court and are remanded to judicial custody.
