Bengaluru: The State’s Criminal Investigation Department on Tuesday started a probe into the death of a Congolese citizen who died on Monday morning after being arrested for drug peddling.

The man identified as Joel Shindani Malu (27) was taken to a private hospital after he complained of chest pain where he later died allegedly of a heart attack.

Soon a group of African residents of the city arrived at the JC Nagar police station and started protesting which turned violent and had to be lathi-charged by police.

The police arrested five of them and will be making more arrests soon.

The CID team investigating the death has visited the hospital and also questioned the police officials who detained Malu.

The team will be reviewing CCTV footage from the police station and the hospital.

While the post-mortem report of Malu is awaited confirming the exact cause of his death, physicians have reported that there were no external injury marks on him when he was brought to the hospital.
