Gangolli/Uppunda: Over 100 traditional boat fishermen from Byndoor and Gangolli blocked Bull Trawl fishing boats in the sea, expressing their anger over destructive fishing practices.
Traditional fishermen argue that Bull Trawling in coastal waters is devastating fish breeding grounds, directly threatening their livelihood. With depleting fish stocks, they return empty-handed despite risking their lives to fish.
Fishermen have been demanding strict action against illegal fishing practices, urging authorities to crack down on violators. Earlier, fishermen from Mangalore to Karwar had petitioned the government to ban Bull Trawl fishing. Despite complaints, authorities have not taken adequate steps, putting traditional fishermen in a difficult situation.
Covert Illegal Fishing Continues Despite Ban!
Bull Trawl fishing is banned in India under Supreme Court and Central Government orders. However, fishermen allege that illegal practices continue in secret, impacting their ability to support their families. Fishermen have demanded that violators face harsh penalties, including fines and license cancellations.
Tensions Escalating: Coastal Fishermen Warn of Protests!
Leaders from the coastal districts have warned that clashes between traditional fishermen and Bull Trawl boat operators are likely if authorities fail to take swift action. Fishermen leaders including Nagesh Kharvi, Suresh Kharvi, and others have vowed to intensify protests if no action is taken soon.
