Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has initiated a probe into Smart City projects in six cities in the state, excluding Bengaluru. Minister for Urban Development Byrathi Suresh has directed officials to submit a comprehensive investigation report within three months.
The government expressed dissatisfaction over funds being diverted to drainage and park renovations instead of projects like smart schools and hospitals. During a progress review meeting held at Vidhana Soudha, the Minister examined works under the Smart City Mission in Mangaluru, Belagavi, Davanagere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Shivamogga, and Tumakuru.
He revealed that projects worth Rs 6,415.51 crore have been implemented in seven Smart Cities since the scheme’s inception. However, unsatisfactory outcomes in several completed projects have led to a decision to investigate works in six cities.
Dissatisfaction Over Project Execution
Projects under the Smart City scheme were funded equally by the central and state governments, with each city receiving an estimated Rs 990 crore. Although most projects have been completed, Minister Suresh expressed concerns over the lack of focus on constructing permanent structures such as smart schools, hospitals, libraries, and bus terminals.
Deadline Set for March 2025
The Minister emphasized that the Smart City Mission must conclude by March 2025. He directed officials to allocate the remaining funds towards constructing international-standard smart schools equipped with modern technology.
He added that these schools should provide advanced learning materials, ensuring underprivileged children benefit from enhanced educational opportunities.
