Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has issued a new directive allowing shops and commercial establishments with 10 or more employees to remain open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, under certain conditions.

The guidelines state that employees can work a maximum of 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week, with provisions for overtime of up to 10 hours per day and 50 hours per week. If employers require staff to work on a designated rest day or beyond standard hours, they will face fines.

One mandatory weekly off-day must be given to each employee, and businesses are required to display detailed employee information at the workplace, including leave records.

Employers are also required to provide transportation for female employees working night shifts, with mandatory security and basic amenities like restrooms, safety lockers, and washrooms.

Key conditions include:

  • Maximum of 10 hours per day and 50 hours per week for employees.
  • Fines for exceeding work hours or failing to provide weekly off.
  • Transport and security provisions for female employees working night shifts.
