On Monday, the Karnataka police registered the first case under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), replacing the colonial Indian Penal Code.

The case involves an incident of ‘rash and negligent driving’ leading to ‘death by negligence.’ The accident occurred near Seege Gate between Hassan city and Halebeedu, where a car driven by Sagar of Halebeedu veered off a bridge due to rash driving.

Ravi H S, who filed the complaint, and driver Sagar survived because of airbags, but Ravi’s mother-in-law sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead at the hospital. Charges have been brought against Sagar under sections 106 (death by negligence) and 281 (rash and negligent driving) of the BNS.
