The latest developments in the state’s transport sector indicate a gradual shift towards digital payment systems. Transport Minister Ramlinga Reddy had earlier announced plans for digital payment integration within state transport agencies. However, as the budget session draws to a close, complete implementation remains elusive in some key departments.

Presently, the Northwest Transport sector has nearly completed the implementation stage. Notably, conductors on routes from Hubli to Mangaluru are equipped with QR code strips, allowing passengers to scan and pay for tickets using the Phone Pay app. Successful trials conducted in 415 buses over three months have paved the way for further expansion, with around 1.2 lakh digital transactions totaling Rs 2.3 crore.

The system, inaugurated in Hubli in February, has since been extended to several depots, including Belagavi, Dharwad, and Haliyala, with plans for further expansion.

Mahantesh, Chief Traffic Manager of North Western Transport, notes a positive response from passengers towards digital payment methods.

Meanwhile, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) leads the charge in digital payment adoption, recording transactions worth Rs 4.5 crore monthly. Efforts are underway to extend digital payment options for passes and regular tickets, potentially boosting revenues to 13 to 18 crores.

Preparations are also underway in Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Kalyan Transport for digital payment integration.

While KSRTC plans to install digital payment systems in existing ticket vending machines, Kalyan Karnataka Transport is in the initial stages of bank tie-ups, with implementation expected in the coming year.
