Dharwad: The Arive Guru Award ceremony at Karnatak University, Dharwad, was cancelled following protests by students over the recent controversy surrounding the textbook ‘Belagu’.

The event was scheduled for January 29 at the university’s Suvarna Mahotsava Auditorium, where Dr. Chandrashekara Kambara, Prof. N.M. Bujurke, and Dr. V.G. Talawar were set to receive the prestigious award.

However, tensions escalated after students objected to the presence of Prof. Krishna Nayak of the Publication Department on the stage, citing his involvement in the recent controversy surrounding the book ‘Belagu’.

On Tuesday, student groups formally submitted a petition to the Registrar, demanding Prof. Nayak’s removal from the event. Despite their objections, the university planned to proceed with the ceremony under police security. In response, the protesting students announced a boycott of the event.

Following the rising tensions, the university postponed the event. However, the dignitaries who had arrived to receive the award chose to leave without accepting it, leading to embarrassment for the university administration.
