Manipal: Women and Child Welfare Department Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar inaugurated a massive tree-planting program in Manipal and said that the entire state, including Udupi, would flourish with new vigor in five years.

She was addressing the gathering of the Vanamahotsava program, held at Udayavani’s Head Office in collaboration with the Social Forestry Department.

Addressing the audience at the Vanamahotsava program, Minister Hebbalkar expressed her optimism for the future, stating that the entire state, including Udupi, would flourish as the old challenges recede, and new opportunities take root. She emphasized the importance of following the government’s directive to plant five crore saplings annually, to plant 25 crore saplings throughout the region, transforming it into a success rather than a mere order.

The Deputy Conservator of Forests, Clifford Lobo, shed light on the current forest cover in the district, revealing that it stands at 28.4 percent and highlighting the target of achieving 33 percent forest cover, as set by the government. Lobo stressed the necessity of increasing forest cover in urban areas to 40 percent, which would contribute to a greener and more sustainable environment.

Attended by various dignitaries, including District Collector Kurma Rao and CEO Prasanna H.  The event witnessed the distribution of different tree saplings such as teak, jackfruit, pear, sampige, neem, lemon, custard apple, pomegranate, tamarind, etc to the public.

Minister Hebbalkar took the opportunity to acknowledge the vital role played by the media, particularly the local newspaper “Udayavani,” in promoting environmental awareness and joining hands with the Vanamahotsava initiative. She commended the newspaper’s commitment to environmental preservation and praised its longstanding contribution to society.

Dr. Sandhya S. Pai, Managing Editor of “Taranga,” emphasized the importance of not only planting trees but also ensuring their proper maintenance and care. She stressed the need for various departments to collaborate and provide the public with information on tree planting and nurturing, urging everyone to work collectively to protect and preserve the planted saplings.
