Kasargod: Manjeshwar police are probing the death of a 35-year-old Jharkhand man, working as a labourer at a plantation in Bayar’s Kaniyala here over rumours of murder and subsequent burial of his body on the farm here.
The deceased Shivchand is said to have died around one and a half months ago and his mortal remains were buried in the farm.
Few of the other labourers from Jharkhand suspected the circumstances of his death and there were talks that Shivchand was killed and later buried here. The police got a whiff of these rumours and began the investigations.
However, during the course of interrogations, conflicting statements regarding this incident have been given by the estate owner, Sanjay (a relative of the deceased) and other labourers.
Initial investigations revealed that Shivchand died due to an electric shock that he sustained while felling trees in the plantation. Later his body was buried near a pond here with help of a few labourers, in Sanjay’s presence.
Police have detained a relative of the plantation owner and a few labourers for questioning.
Since there are suspicions surrounding his death the police are likely to exhume his body for further probe. The body was to be exhumed on Saturday but later it was decided to do so in the presence of kin of the deceased who are expected to arrive from Jharkhand.
