Kaup: A wild bison (Gaur) that had fallen into a drain was rescued at Uchila here on Tuesday.

The six-year-old bison had strayed into human habitation and fell into a drain pit near Mahalakshmi Temple on Monday night. The staff of the temple noticed the wild beast and informed the forest department on Tuesday morning.

Under the guidance of Assistant Conservator of Forest Clifford Lobo and cooperation from the temple’s management and staff, a team of forest department officials rescued the bison.

Sub-zonal forest officer Jeevandas Shetty told Udayavani that the bison was scared and was unable to free itself.  The rescue operation was carried out at night to avoid any untoward incident. The soil around the pit was removed using earthmover, allowing the bison to free itself, he added.
