Kerala’s ‘Sea Wave Breaker’ system to be implemented soon in Ullal

Ullal: Towards achieving a permanent solution to the sea erosion issue, the state government has decided to go for the ‘Sea-Wave Breaker’ system, as a pilot programme.
This system is already in place in Kerala and will be for the first time implemented in Coastal Karnataka.
The Sea-Wave Breaker system doesn’t require any boulders or tetrapods to be placed. It will be a concrete frame with dimensions of 50 feet in length, 15-20 feet tall, and 20 feet wide.
Sea-Wave Breaker was invented by a businessman from Kasargod named U K Yusuf. He has patented the technology. It has passed tests from the Kerala Engineering Research Institute. It’s just a two-month-old innovation.
According to the reports, the technology has worked well in Kerala and is said to be 15 percent less expensive than that of other sea erosion control systems.
The concrete frame will be weighing close to 400 tonnes when compared to that of other stones and tetrapods which weigh only about 5-10 tonnes. Hence, it is effective in controlling the sea from swallowing nearby lands.
Explaining its construction process, Yusuf said that at first the seashore would be dug until rocks appear. Later, a concrete frame would be made consisting of sand, mud, cement, and other materials. He says to beautify this, on top, one could lay garden and plant saplings.
Meanwhile, the officials of the Department of Ports and Inland Water Transport have forwarded the quotation of Rs 24 crores to the state government. As per the quotation, the project will include a 1 km stretch of Sea Wave Breaker, road construction, a garden, and a lighting system.
It can be noted that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on his recent visit to the district for accessing the rain-affected areas had met the Sea Wave Breaker system’s inventor Yusuf and had taken information from him. State of Fisheries, Ports and Inland Transport S Angara had also visited Kerala to take note of its functionality.
