Kolar: Agitated employees of Wistron’s iPhone manufacturing plant at Kolar’s Narasapura here went on a rampage on Saturday over delayed salary payments.
The violence broke out at around 6.30 am on Saturday morning. As per reports majority of the nightshift workers, around 2000 in number, vandalised the premises, smashing the offices of senior executives, the factory’s front lobby and flipping parked cars. They even attempted to set fire to the vehicles.
The police personnel immediately rushed to the spot and allegedly lathicharged the protesting workers. Over 100 people have been detained by the police
It is not yet clear what triggered the morning violence. Sources said that workers have alleged a discriminatory attitude by the company in wage payments towards local workers.
“The workers are being paid Rs 12,000 for a shift that spans upto 12 hours since last few months while they were promised a salary of Rs 16,000 per month for an 8-hour work shift.
Few workers who complained about this to the management have been fired,” the source added.
