Koppal: Four women are feared drowned after being washed away while crossing a stream in Sankanur village of Yalaburga taluk on Saturday.

According to locals, Girija Kallanagouda Mali Patil (32), Bhuvaneshwari Shantaveeriah Police Patil (40), Pavithra Siddaiah Police Patil (45), and Veena Basavaraja Mali Patil (19) of Sankanur village were washed away by the strong currents of the stream.

At the time of the incident, the women were returning home from a cotton factory where they worked.

The flow in the stream was rapid due to the heavy rains received earlier during the day. Unaware of the danger, the women tried to cross the stream on foot as usual. But were washed away by the strong currents, locals said.

Two among them caught hold of tree roots near the banks. Though villagers tried to recue them using ropes and ladders but were washed away before help could arrive, they added.

Koppal SP Arunangshu Giri told Udayavani that the Yalaburga police station PSI has gone to the spot of the mishap.
