Kotekar robbery case: Who is mysterious ‘Shashi Thevar’?

Robbery case follow-up: The mastermind is from Dakshina Kannada; his capture could expose everything

Ullal: “Shashi Thevar” is not the person police are searching for. According to sources, the name was allegedly used by the prime accused in the Kotekar Vyavasaya Seva Sangha gold robbery operation to refer to his informer or local accomplice.

Currently, various teams of Mangaluru police are searching across multiple states for this mastermind, who is believed to have gone into hiding under this alias. The individual, reportedly a local resident of Dakshina Kannada district, has no direct connection to the person named “Shashi Thevar” as earlier speculated.

Reports indicate that the suspect was previously involved in another robbery in the region a few years ago. He disappeared afterward, adopting different names in various places. Investigations suggest that the mastermind behind the Kotekar robbery could be an old offender from Mangaluru.

A local gang with external links?

Sources reveal that the mastermind was not alone in this robbery. It is suspected that two other gang members were involved. The suspect is believed to have committed robberies in Mumbai and other locations, with cases registered against him in Mumbai and Pune.

Interestingly, the Kotekar robbery was allegedly not executed by a single gang. Instead, it appears that robbers from multiple states collaborated. This has complicated the police investigation. There are suspicions about the involvement of the Sahibganj gang from North India. Reports suggest that two Hindi-speaking individuals were part of the group, further supporting this theory.

Clever planning by Murugandi

The suspected mastermind, Murugandi, is said to have meticulously planned the entire operation in collaboration with a local contact. However, he did not actively participate in the robbery. Instead, he waited in the driver’s seat of a car parked near Kannan Matti. While others entered the bank, Murugandi remained in the car, ready to escape once the operation succeeded.

Murugandi had reportedly gathered details about the bank and its surroundings over six months, even mapping an escape route to Talapady. The car used for the escape belonged to him, and he was fully prepared to flee with the stolen gold once the robbery succeeded.

Murugandi was hiding in Tirunelveli when the police rushed there and apprehended him just in time. A delay of even half a day could have allowed Murugandi and his associates to return to Mumbai, where they planned to sell the stolen gold in the black market and split the money.

However, their plan failed due to a car breakdown, which delayed their journey. While they were considering taking a train, the police tracked them down and arrested them.
