Mangaluru: A 28-year-old female elephant, belonging to the Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt, was shifted to Hirekal Mutt at Honnali in Davanagere district on Monday to allow her a chance to mate with a male elephant and have a calf.
The pachyderm, Subhadra had been brought to the Sri Krishna Mutt here when she was three years and has been living in the Mutt premises since then.
Subhadra was shifted to Hirekal Mutt in a truck, after following all the rules and regulations, in the presence of the staff of Department of Forests and representatives of both the mutts.
The decision to shift Subhadra was taken on the advice of the Forest Department officers and after consulting a veterinarian.
The Hirekal Mutt was chosen owing to its proximity to the Tungabhadra river as well as the sugarcane fields around. Moreover since the Sakrebailu elephant training camp, which is located nearby houses several tuskers chances of Subhadra finding a suitable potential mate is good.
