KSEAB announces reforms in SSLC, PUC examination system for 2023-24

The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board has unveiled a comprehensive reform plan for the upcoming academic year 2023-24. The decision, outlined in an official order released on Tuesday, brings about a major shift in the assessment structure for SSLC and Secondary Pre-University Course (PUC) examinations.

Under the current examination system, students typically undergo one annual examination followed by a supplementary examination. This setup often leads to heightened stress levels among students. However, the new system introduces a more flexible approach by allowing students to sit for a total of three examinations for both SSC and PUC. What sets this reform apart is that students can retain the subject-wise marks obtained in their best attempts.

One of the most notable changes is the renaming of the examinations. The conventional “Supplementary Examination” has been rebranded as “Annual Examination 1, 2, and 3,” reflecting the revamped structure.

This reform provides students with the freedom to reject the marks obtained in the annual examination if they are dissatisfied. Only the marks secured in the supplementary examination will be considered as the final scores for the student, disregarding any previous exam results. However, the new system empowers students to retain their best subject-wise marks from any of the three attempts.

To ensure fairness and consistency, the board will issue clear guidelines for students to navigate this restructured examination system. The content and difficulty level of the exams will be standardized across the three attempts. Additionally, students will be able to select their subject-wise best scores from these attempts.

Furthermore, a bridging program will be implemented for first-year PUC or undergraduate students who enroll late in the academic year, ensuring that they are not disadvantaged by the new examination system.

The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board’s reform represents a progressive step towards creating a less stressful and more student-friendly assessment framework for SSC and PUC examinations, which is set to come into effect in the 2023-24 academic year.
