Mangaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), in order to reduce its financial burden, has decided to sell the buses with it that have travelled 9 lakh kilometres to schools and colleges at highly discounted prices.

KSRTC scraps buses that have travelled for 10 lakhs kilometres. However, now they have decided to sell it to educational institutions for their use and stave of the high financial loses it has incurred during the COVID-19-induced lockdown.

The decision has been implemented in 17 KSRTC divisions of the state. 61 buses have already been sold from 8 divisions.

However, according to KSRTC, institutions in the coastal Karnataka districts have not shown enthusiasm for this scheme. Only one bus from Mangaluru Division has been sold to a school at a discounted rate.

KSRCT has already converted some of its old buses to Corona Mobile Clinics and high tech women’s toilet.

Managing Director of the Corporation, Shivayogi Kalasada stated that they are also considering a plan to operate double-decker buses in major tourist destinations.

Abdul Khader, Coordinator of the Netra Jyothi College at Udupi which brought one of the buses stated that they bought the bus a few months ago. It cost them only Rs 6 lakhs for the bus including the sale price and service. A new bus would have cost them more than Rs 45 lakhs.
