Mangaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be starting a new service of providing the ‘green bus’ to farmers to transport their produce of vegetables and fruits to the market.
The railways have already started the Kisan Rail service to transport agricultural products. KSRTC’s green bus initiative is planned on similar lines.
Presently, trucks are mostly used for farm produce transportation. KSRTC claims that they have high fares whereas the Corporation will offer special concessionary fares for their green bus.
Already a few buses that have travelled for more than 10 lakh kilometres have been modified by KSRTC for this purpose.
The initiative also comes at a time when KSRTC’s revenue has been hit by a number of events, including the lockdown and the employees strike.
The Corporation started new innovative bus services as part of new revenue generation streams including oxygen buses, ICU buses, mobile toilets and mobile libraries.
