Bengaluru: In the budget presentation for 2024-25, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced significant initiatives aimed at bolstering the fisheries sector in the state.

Siddaramaih announced projects worth Rs 3,000 crore for the fisheries department in the coming years to ensure comprehensive development.

Key highlights of the budget allocation include the establishment of a fisheries research center at Manki/Kasarakod in Honnavar taluk and a state-of-the-art fish market at Bhadravati.

Additionally, aqua parks will be set up, and a well-equipped fishing port is slated for construction at Murudeshwar in Bhatkala taluk.
Furthermore, an inland fishing skill development center will be established at Alamatti in Vijayapura.

Under the Matsya Asha Kirana Yojana, the state’s share of compensation for coastal fishermen during fishing bans will see an increase from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000. Moreover, a marine ambulance, costing Rs 7 crore, will be procured to swiftly assist fishermen who fall ill or encounter emergencies during sea fishing expeditions.

In a bid to address housing needs, the government plans to provide subsidies for the construction of houses to 10,000 homeless fishermen under various housing schemes. Additionally, Rs 20 crore has been allocated for the upgrading of 16 fish fry production centers in collaboration with NABARD.

The budget also allocates Rs 6 crore for fisheries activities in mine-affected areas of Chitradurga, Holalkere, and Hosadurga taluks.
Siddaramaiah emphasized that these expenditures are essential for the sector’s growth and the welfare of fishermen communities in the state.
